When you feel like Giving Up, Become a Demon and get Revenge!

Every day since I started this business,  I've asked myself "What in the pajesus am I doing?"  I realize that so many things make no sense at all in this business.  However, a lot of things do.  I talked to my first real boss John Kerwin today.  He even though a celebrity (in my eyes you are) gave me the first real opportunity to treat me as if I really knew what I was doing.  I just got it!  for the first time in my life,  I understood what my purpose was.  I have him to thank for the great experiences I've had.  Rubbing shoulders with people like Ed Asner, and Michael Gross.  Jumping in the back of Limo's to save my audience from seeing our main talent before the show....I feel like I owe it to him to give special thanks to since he really gave me a chance.
Now I'm on my way to having a very successful business as a video producer and ceo of my own bad boy biz...
I'm not ghetto people,  I've been ghetto. Time to step it up a few notches.
2011 is almost gone, and I feel exhausted from the hard work it has brought me.  But, I also consider it a blessing.  2011 allowed me to not cry or whine about this ungodforsaken economy,  it has allowed this woman to step to the plate and fight for my right to career freedom.
Often times I want to quit and can't believe I took this chance.  Many times I think how frightening it is starting with nothing.  Most times I barely eat since I don't know how much longer the food supply will run out.  Many times I feel like giving up. Instead I will become a demon and get Revenge!!

Professionalism by texting?

So here it is at 4:44 am (my nemesis). I am wide awake and can't sleep because of a NON-Client who has been texting me for two days.  First what makes it comical to me is that he was trying to set an appointment by texting.  What intrigues me is where is the professionalism here?
This person contacted me approx. 5 months ago requesting to have some music vid made.  At the time I spoke to him, he hadn't even put lyrics to his music and sent me 3 MP3's of some shoddy keyboard tracks.  I explained to him that I would need to have completed music to produce the video,  gave him some solid advice on scripting since he didn't want to pay my fees for that.  (I charge $350 for scripting, design and development).  I wished him luck and told him to contact me when he had everything completed.
5 months later, I'm receiving a random text asking to set an appointment on a Saturday (which I don't work, unless it's contracted) No details just I'm coming over to your studio on Saturday at 2:30 what's your address? I asked him several times to call me by phone.  He just kept insisting on getting the address and wasn't cooperating with calling me.
I asked the person to identify themselves, and to call me so I could get more details.  (The text only shows the phone number as I don't plug in every person who contacts me in my address book?)
The client only responded by continuing to ask me for my office address. He started to become hostile because I wasn't making the appointment.
I tried to contact the client by phone and got a digital recording to leave a voicemail.  Not even a real person on the recording?  At this point I wasn't only thinking that why would a recording artist not record a voicemail? I was also thinking, this could be dangerous.
The best part was that each time I requested that this person contact me by phone  as I would need  more details, the person was getting angry and insulting me for not giving him my address.
At what point do you say no to business?  What professional person sets appointments with a video producer by text messaging.  Am I supposed to have less courtesy than other professions?
The person wanted to spend $500 to put together a stock footage music video, which is great.  However he would have cost me over $500 in grief.  At what point do you walk away from business?
When the person can't make a phone call or talk over the phone, they are probably not legit.
He even had the gall,  to tell me he was a broker who worked from 6am-5pm.
I frankly don't care if he was the President,  If he can't pick up the phone and have a conversation with me about his project then there is no project.
As a professional I always try to do the right thing.   My integrity is very valuable to me.  I treat my clients in a very special manner and with the utmost respect.  I demand respect back.  Does he think I'm that desperate for $500 bucks?   I only set appointments with people I know and trust.  If it's a client, I would have a contract in place before I spend any time dealing with them face to face.
What makes me not be able to sleep is the fact that this person thought it was my problem that I wasn't making an appointment via text with a complete stranger???
As much as I'd like to make $500,  I don't need his money and when all is said and done it's not the money it's the relationship that was missing.  I'm in this industry because I love what I do.  But I also love that I can say no when it doesn't feel right.
Take care Mr. Non Client.

The trend of the future is already here, I wish is was here years ago!

In this great big world of iphones, apps, gaming, and multi media platforms it's easy to get lost in the mix of this new generation.  I'm always intrigued by how every day this world becomes more exciting with technology.

Although I'm not a very technical person, I am still interested in Apps and how technology is being driven.  In business we are experiencing a huge lean toward social media and how it's affecting our ROI.  In our social life we want to know where are friends are and what they're up to. By a few clicks on Foursquare they can find us easily. (I'll admit, I sneak off and don't want to be found)

I feel as if I can't keep up with it all sometimes.  And other times I wish they would have came out with this stuff years ago.

Like the Family App?? This thing is great!  You can organize your schedule, and make grocery lists without ever having to talk to or see your family.  This is awesome.  Had I had this before,  it would have saved a lot of household arguments.

An Aspiring Writer, Requests Work

An aspiring writer befriended me on Twitter not too long ago.  We have bantered back and forth about varying topics. He tweeted several comments in response to my "Stop Working for Free" campaign.

One day he sent me a Tweet asking me about work.   I must admit, I was taken back by his lax way of applying for a job.  I explained to him that not knowing his skill set I would need to see a resume, I scolded him in a sense saying it's more traditional practice to send a resume and cover letter when applying for work.

Now, I'm sure that many Producers out there would never bother with someone that would not benefit them.  However, I believe that everyone needs a little direction at times.  It's my way of giving back to the community. I clearly saw that he needed some help.

After reading his resume I made several notes and then set up a time to give him a consultation. What impressed me the most about this young man was that he took my advice and within hours he had a new job and made some additional contacts.

He really blew me away when he said that if it wasn't for me telling him to stop doing all the free work out there, he wouldn't have pursued other areas.  I'm extremely blessed and honored to have had the chance to serve him.  I wish him the best of luck. I know that he will seek and find lots of opportunity.

The entertainment industry is a magical industry, and right now I feel like a fairy godmother. ;)

Craigslist And the Ban for Doing work for FREE

For quite some time now I've been seeing a wicked trend of  Film Makers working for Credit and sometimes a meal, instead of money.   This is a trend that needs to Cease and Desist.  I hope to describe to anyone reading this blog why.  I also have a special request afterwards. Here is the reason we need to stop working for free:
1.   The Economy.  In order for our economy to improve we need to spend money.  If you work for Credit/Meal you may not have to buy groceries. However,  while you stock up on Craft services (place gently in pockets) What about shopping, Dining, and Rent?  I can't pay rent with an IMDb credit.  Where does the IMDb credit get you these days, anyway?  No one cares that I was Ashley Olsen's (Olsen Twins) Stunt Devil and Stand in when she was 14! No one cares that I've been a Co-Producer of a National TV show.  No one cares that I was the spokesperson for Coleman Campers.  To the best of my knowledge people who want to hire me as a Producer are looking for someone who can handle the damn job!  Most of the time, I'm sure they don't even know what the IMDb stands for.
2.   No other profession expects their people to work for such nonsense.  At least when you intern as a medical professional there is a good chance you will be hired for pay.  The biggest reason is taking pride in what we do.  I work my ass off every day to be the best damn producer I can be and I am well worth the money I charge for the work I do.  To work for no pay is a slap in the face! When I see ads for Editor's and they are offered $8.00 an hour it's embarrassing.   I understand that people just starting out need to get their big feet through the door.  However, when we continue to allow people to take advantage of us, we'll get taken.
3.  A Talent Manager I worked for back in the 80's (yea that's right, I'm old) gave me the best advice ever "The Entertainment Industry is a business.  It's a Multi Trillion dollar business that was made up of dreams.  Just remember it's still a business".  That was by far the best thing anyone could have ever told me.
It's also the hardest part for an artist (as we all are) because we went to Film School instead of Business School.  Try going to Business School and telling them that you work for free on the majority of your projects.  I'm sure the students would say "You gotta put in your time".
I love this industry and have had some of my best experiences working with people like Bruce Willis, Ed Asner, Michael Gross, Connie Stevens, Mary Kate and Ashley, Just to name a few.  I have been fortunate to be paid well on a lot of these projects.  As a professional business woman I am asking that you all start realizing your credits will only get you so far.  What's the difference if you have credits but have to end your dream, because you had to take on Full Time work to pay your bills.  What happens then? Do you think that your next employer will care that you almost spilled coffee on John Lithgow?
I'd like everyone to realize that You are worth more than that.  Take the time to answer the Craigslist Ads and let people know We are done working for free.  If they want a video or graphics to be done, they will have to get a budget and pay for it.  Just like I can't buy a Cheeseburger at the Jack in the Box on credit, they need to pay you for the work you performed.
I do offer consultation for free on the many ways to act as a business person in the Entertainment Industry.

Websites and their new Importance!

Ok, so this week has been really hectic, I've had company for five days straight which is fun, however you still need to work when your importance is the success of a small company.  It's crazy we are almost belly up and I am doing everything I can just to get started.  Most small businesses fail and it's hard to stay focused and driven sometimes.
I am really happy to say the the new Website is almost complete.  When I get this finished, one of my goals is to start a Vlog.  I am open to suggestions.  (for realsy's) In making the decision to re-do the website I've had a lot of shopping around and then I found a really great company www.tinyfrog.com. Mikel Bruce and Inga have really been cool to work with.  I'm really excited to see the site coming along.
I specialize in a whimsical, fun personality and really enjoy life and I think that they have really captured who I am as a business person.
Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE was telling me how the website was really affecting my businesses results makes me even more excited that it is almost complete. My advice if you are thinking of updating your site is make sure you find someone who wants you to be a success.  Many of the Website people I have been working with were extremely unprofessional and extremely pushy.
Your website really is a reflection of you as a business but you as a professional as well. The company that just ripped us off for close to $1200 was really difficult to work with.
Think about why they call it an "online store".   It is the most important tool that you have.  It is a reflection of you.  Spending money on this is imperative to your company's success.  So if it's one of your biggest Statements then why go cheezy?
Oh and speaking of Cheese, my remedy of the week is Doritoes with Greek Yogurt, and watching any movie with Bradley Cooper in it!

So the guy says"But can you play the part of a Mom"?

Earlier this week I was looking for some extra ways to make some quick cash.  So I opened up Craigslist and found an ad that titled "Actor's/Commercial" for those of you who may not know,  I was a Professional Actress.  (My IMDb page http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0340565/) It has been a while since I've been in front of the Camera.  I'm sure I'll be a bit rusty.  And while I prefer to work behind the scenes now, I'm still relying on the 3 years of studying at the Actor's Workshop in Royal Oak, Michigan and the 1/2 year at Second City in Detroit, to get me through the audition.
So with all that talent and experience I applied.  Not really knowing what they were looking for, I did what any other professional would do.  I sent them my head shots, (thanks to Lucie Aleks of Studio Moonlight who just helped me update those old pics) my resume and a quick few lines of how I found them. I then requested more details.
Much to my surprise I got an email back the next day asking for a demo reel.  Apparently they wanted to see me in action.  I didn't have a demo reel of myself.  However, I did send them an MP3 of my Radio Talk Show "Tire Kickers Radio" (for those of you who didn't know I'm a Radio Personality as well).  Shortly after sending them this file I got the call from the producer.  I'm not sure if it was my Jolting Smile or my Golden Pipes that sold them but he called and asked me a very important question.
He asked me with a very stern, deep voice "So can you play a mom"?
For those of you who didn't know I'm also a mom of a beautiful 24 year old daughter,.  I said with confidence "I'm pretty sure, I can do that".
So if you are reading this you're reading the words of the next spokesperson for a new coupon that will have me acting in the video's.  I'll post the first video as soon as it's done.
Can I play a Mom?  Scheeeesh!

My Progress In the Film Industry Oh Crap, I'm an Enrepreneur?

So It's been a while since I wrote on here.  I would love to write in here once a week but hell,  I'm crazy busy!  Just to update my invisible, uncountable audience is reading this:
  1. Changed my website http://www.evegrey.com (it's short like me)
  2. Hired an AWESOME Career Coach (advisable)
  3. Been working on a Crazy Promotion called "Tube Zoom"
  4. took in a friend that was homeless.  (it was the right thing to do)
I really haven't had much time to do the blog (my apologies to those who really read this stuff).  Exciting Update be watching for me!!! doing my own Vlog!  It's so fun to be a WebStar?
Oh and did I mention that I started Dating a Cool Guy Named Matt?  There was two in the running but I'm pickin this little whiper snaper!  Ok TMI!!
I had an amazing conversation with some of the protesters at OccupySD.  I'm intriqued by how intelligent so many of them are,  and How Little the Rest of the World knows about what the movement is about. Okay, enough about that.
I'm so flattered, one of the protestors asked me to advise him on a movie he is doing for a contest at SDSU.  I just know he is going to win the contest!  I'm very excited for him.  If anyone needs some expertise with running their show or production,  I'm more than happy to help out.
I have also re-polished my proposal for "Families of Deployment".

I am also still teaching myself to work with Final Cut Pro.  However, I met a really cool guy who works for A..... (Hiding Identity) Anyway, he has been showing me some really cool color correction techniques.  FCP is still an A-Whole to me...

Production is cool, it's a ton of work getting started.  I realized I'm an entrepreneur when I started waking up wanting to work!

Building Referral Relationships

I had the opportunity to listen to a great speaker yesterday from Venture Builder Inc.  John Rodolff (President) gave an awesome speech on Building Referral Relationships for business.

Here is what I learned:

Look for a Referral Partner:

A referral partner has the same target market as you do
A referral partner accesses the same level of the companies you do (CEO or Marketing manager)
A referral partner is reaching the business at the same moment (when the business is going through a change)

Where to find Prospective Referral Partners (P.R.P):

Single Profession Associations (ex. The Association of Realtors)
***Ask someone you know that attends his or her meetings if you can be a guest?
Professional Associations
***Key here is DO NOT TRY TO SELL ANYTHING

Look for Referral Partners that Specialize in areas.  No Generalized Goals.
(I work with small to med businesses)  **This is too General.
(I work with clients that have an ROI of 50k or more that are in marketing management).

Questions to ask the Prospective Referral Partner:
How well do you get to know your clients business?
How has your company been affected by the economical downturn?

How to prepare your first coffee meeting with a Prospective Referral Partner:
Research their website and Linkedin (print pages off and make notes to ask them
Ask opinions of your business plans or website
**The host or person requesting the meeting always pays for the coffee

First Meeting with P. R.P.

Talk about the following: Where you met them.  Who else have they met? What other organizations do they belong to? Why would a person choose to work with PRP instead of their competition?
*** Anything other than Selling your product or service.

Conclude with an Action Item:
Next time we get together I will do this or they agree to do something

Maintain a Healthy Relationship with your PRP by keeping in contact with them.

Characteristics of good PRP’s
Personality:  Are they compatible with you?
Expert:  Are they an Expert in their field?
Differentiated: Why are you referring them instead of someone else?
Principled: Are they ethical?

I'm not sure if this works yet, however, I will be trying it out? I'll let you know.
I do want to give special thanks to John and the San Diego Chamber of Commerce for giving this lesson on referrals.

If the rest of the economy would stop being so paranoid maybe we could all move forward?

Ok let's all face the fact that after 9-11 we we're pampered and spoiled and became somewhat greedy.  Mortgages were a huge magic carpet ride for a large majority of the American people.  All the advice in the world wasn't enough to block the fix of greed.  Now we have gone from greed to homage to the microwave band-aid that we utilize to find cure to our financial illnesses.
The problem is that we have allowed the rest of the trend and media influence us on becoming crippled as a nation.
Truth has it; we are not crippled we have become self-paralyzed  allowing our fore-come become our out-come.
Do we not have choices?
No solution? Kick-Start it by buying a freakin pack of gum.
At this point .25 cents is better than .0

Success breeds Success (If you believe it will)

Okay, even though my business has been on the books since last year; this is the firs year that I had a solid plan that is really proven to be successful.  I have had a lot of pain and joy over the last year trying to figure it all out.
Although this week has really been proven to be a Hat Trick and a half there is still a lot I have to learn.
Thoughts become things.  If you dwell on the negative, more negative will incubate and become like cancer in your life.
When you focus on goals that are positive and envision that  those dreams or goals have already come true; you become magnetic.
The law of attraction will create what you focus on.  If you focus on bad things in your life, then you will face the snowball effect of more bad things happening to you.
If you create in your mind the beauty and joy that your DAILY accomplishments bring to you; you will create a generation of beauty, success and joy.
The very best part is you have control over your own destiny.
If you believe in it: it will come true.

I Want to turn my "Rose Colored Glasses" in for a pair of Prada's

I'm a Betsy Johnson inspired part-time DJ, Actress, and full time Entrepreneur.  Who knows what she wants and is seriously on her way to get it.  I am inspired by women of great Success.  Oprah, Barbara Walters, Madonna.  I also take great pride in being a woman and being driven.  I'm a feminist at heart but don't believe I need to bust balls to get somewhere.

When my mother and I would discuss me becoming a vocalist in a band she would say sternly, "Take off your Rose Colored Glasses,  Pick a real job like becoming a nail technician",  I would reply back to her that someday my Rose Colored Glasses will be made by Prada!

My mom used to also tell me "You can Be Anything if you try".  So it's not a wonder that I'm confused. LOL!

Within the next six months I have a goal to become the Video Place that all San Diegans think of.  I want EveGreyProductions to take over the world?  Just kidding.
But I'm still gonna get those Prada's.  the end!

Create Your Own Opportunity

This week has been very exciting for me.  I joined the Better Business Bureau and the San Diego Chamber of Commerce.  I will say that this time around I'm not waiting for an opportunity,  I'm creating opportunity.
I have the ability to become bigger and better if I allow myself to soak up all the information I can.
My faith clings deeply as I'm about to venture into an area of being a business owner, an entrepreneur, a leader.  I will make my own destiny.
I could spend every day filling out applications in this busted up economy or I could find ways to create business.
The other way is a lot more fun!

A little PR goes a long way...Written by Eve and Maureen of EveGreyProductions

EVEGREYPRODUCTIONS HAS The answer to KEEP YOUR CUSTOMERS TUNED IN: Internet Video!
Recent projections for the Internet is there will be over 2.10 billion Internet users by 2012.  97% of consumers now use online media when researching products and services in their local area.   YouTube (video content only) is the 2nd largest search engine in the world making video content the hottest item on the internet!  There are more than 1 billion videos watched worldwide everyday!
82% of internet users are familiar with video, 52% of those take an action as a result of that video and 16% of those purchase as a result of that video.  If your company doesn’t have video on your website it is missing out on the most compelling marketing tool of our time.   It only mades sense to offer your clients access to your goods and services via internet video.
CEO Eve Grzadzinski of EveGreyProductions L.L.C., (formerly Co-Producer of the John Kerwin Show and Ashley Olson’s Stunt person), saw a need in San Diego for a full service Videography Company that would allow clients to incorporate Hollywood calibre video into their businesses without spending the money of a Hollywood Production.
Eve accessed her extensive network of film professionals and has a formidable collection of 9 Cinematographers, 4 Editors and 4 Associate Producers to do your bidding.  Her team is experienced and will craft the video that will get your business the internet presence it needs to stay competitive and capture a much larger  market share than businesses not using video marketing.

A letter to Josh

A young Director, Producer and Actor asked for some guidance today on writing a good proposal.  It's so fun when I am asked to evaluate something.  I love the enthusiasm these fresh faces bring to me.
I decided to include this in my blog today since there are some common mistakes that people make when they create a Proposal for film or television.
These points do not include the proposal process all the way, but they are some very good tips that anyone could use
Hello Josh,

I really thought it was very good.  I think that it was nice that you have put a personality to the Proposal.
Here are my notes for you.
You had one spelling error.  Read it out loud to yourself and then have someone else check it.  Spelling and Grammar are imperative.
List all Players with 1 paragraph Bio's each time you add someone.  It was good that you did that but needs to go in the beginning.  This is also where you would want to add Why this project is important to you and how you would sell it.  Explain "What makes this person important to this project"?
Make sure you sell them on the projects "Uniqueness"  If it is similar tell why this one is so different?
When you are discussing the story write the sentences in the form as if it is happening right in front of them.  What do they see?  Example: Jeremy and I are walking across the blood riddled football field, when two shots are heard.  That' how the project will be captivating.
Leave off No Producers TBD
This should be done page by page so it looks organized..Great job and let me know what else you might need.

Making Lists

I woke up this morning with the intention that I was going to get so much work done but then I realized that my cell phone didn't work.  I can't allow that to get in my way and I have so many other things to be working on.  Blogging is one of them.
My game plan today is to look fresh and start new.  Re-organize my boards, make my game plan for the week, set up a routine for excersice.  Go out and shoot some quality video.
Even though I have no phone the list is endless to what I do without one.
Time management is imperative to those in the entertainment production industry.
I find that what works for me is to create lists.  At the end of my day I have crossed out a dozen or so tasks on my list.  That makes me manage my time better but it also creates a lot of self-esteem because at the end of the day I realize that I have accomplished a whole set of things.  These lists can be used later when writing resume's or cover letters to show that I have tackled these tasks and completed them.
As soon as a thought comes to my head, I write it down.  No human can possibly remember everything.  Once I forgot to write down that I wasn't supposed to update my software on my cell phone.... And this is the reason I can't use it today!

Midlife Show Business

I have become the most independent/dependent person I know.  If this sounds like a double negative it is.  However, aren't double negatives sometimes truthful?
A year can embrace so many changes.  Perhaps it's because I left a miserable job in Aerospace to become a Producer.  How is that possible? Well it is.  While working previously as a material coordinator in Aerospace I have also worked in several other positions.  If I had to describe my career path, I would say it's like a big giant bin of Jelly Belly's.   I have been a Kitchen Designer at The Home Depot wearing an orange apron.  I was a loan officer before the real estate housing bubble burst.   Now wait...Before I sold sub prime mortgages to people who didn't listen to me,  I sold cars for ten years. Other than the main careers I've had; I've also been a huge hobbyist.  I volunteered as an art instructor for children and adult that suffered from mental illness.   I've been a back up vocalist in a band. I organized a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity.  I've been an extra, a double and a stunt person. I've even drove an ice cream truck.
Why producing?  Well,  what doesn't a producer do?  In order to get it right you need to know when to act, how fast to act, and how to come as close to predicting the future as you can.  I'm happy to report to you that a producer wears all hats and it just helps if you know a little about everything in this career.

You are always selling, you are always a customer service supervisor, you babysit, you counsel and you grow excitably happy with every second that it works out.
I am happy to have had all these opportunities that's why when someone asks me to go make coffee I can smile and be happy to do it.
The best part is.... I made the decision to change my career again at the age of 46!
Go after your dream no matter how much of a sacrifice it is.  Never let anything stand in your way but don't step on people on your way up.
The best, best part is it doesn't matter how long it takes to get there enjoy the journey.
